Apteryx Receives 21st Patent
Published: Oct 20, 2016
Apteryx, Inc., a custom software development company based in Akron, announced today the issuance by the US Patent Office of a patent for the application of filters based on image attributes.
The patent for invention number US 8712181 is for the real-time application of filter-style image enhancements to dental images based on the image’s attributes.
“This latest patent allows a user to access a post-acquisition digital image over a computer network and apply any number of filters in real time, per computer, to enhance the image to suit the user’s preference,” said Kevin Crucs, President, Apteryx, Inc. “It grows the number of our patents to 21, which adds confirmation to Apteryx’s leadership in developing software for the dental imaging industry,” he said.
Some users may prefer a high-contrast image, others may prefer an edge-enhanced image, or a particular image color scheme. Users may have other preferences as well, depending on the imaging machine, the image size, the imaging modality, or the particular anatomy being imaged. This patent allows that level of customization by associating an identifier with the image as it is being accessed and displayed.
The identifier may correspond to image size, resolution, manufacturer of the imaging machine, model number of the imaging machine, imaging modality, image color scheme, anatomy or location of origin.
The image enhancements are applied to a displayed image, but are not saved to the image. The enhancements can be combined, turned on, turned off or applied multiple times at the user’s discretion. Certain filters can also be customized by the user to achieve varying levels of enhancement. The various digital filters include noise-removal, spatial sharpening, spatial smoothing, brightness adjust, contrast adjust, gamma correction, low pass, high pass, bandpass, median, threshold, and color mapping.
