HOWTO: Move And Mount Remote Patient Databases

In XrayVision (XV), the patient database can reside on any computer on the network. The Patient databases can be moved to any remote location and mounted by XV no matter where it resides on the network. Methods depend on whether or not the Advanced Database / Mobile Computing Extension is installed.

Due to the possibility of data loss when moving your current patient database from one location to another, a back-up of the database is strongly recommended before the move.

Moving The Patient Database Manually

To manually move the patient database to a remote location on the network:

  1. Make sure that XV is not running on any of the workstations on the network.

  2. Copy/move the /Patients/ folder to the new location on the network.

  3. Share the newly located folder with full read/write permissions for 'Everyone'.

Moving The Patient Database Using The Advanced Database / Mobile Computing extension

The Advanced Database.DLL extension component adds advanced database and mobile computing options to the XV application.

Advanced database functions should only be used by system administrators. These functions will rarely be used but are included to accommodate special circumstances for XV users and special network demands. Misuse of some of these functions may result in the loss of important patient and image data!

To move the patient database:

  1. Make sure that XV is not running on any of the computers on the network.

  2. Start XV on one computer only .

  3. Select Database > Advanced Database > Move Current Database from the menu at the top of the screen.

  4. Select the drive and directory to which the database should be moved.   Apteryx highly recommends specifying the patient database by going through My Network Places instead of selecting a drive letter.

  5. If the selected target directory is ...

    What will happen ...

A database directory (the selected directory itself contains a list of patient sub-directories)

The imported database will be merged with the database in the selected directory

A directory containing one or more database directories

The imported database will be added to the list of databases in the directory (and will not be merged).

    Just another directory

The imported database will simply be moved to the new directory.

  6. Click on the OK button.

Mounting A Remote Patient Database

Once the patient database has been removed to a remote location on the network, it must be mounted within XV (i.e. the new location must be specified within the software).

  1. Start XV on one computer only.

  2. Select Database > Advanced Database > Select Current database from the menu at the top of the screen.

  3. A warning indicated that the change will apply to all licensed copies appears. Click OK to continue.

  4. Navigate to the new location of the /Patients/ folder and click on the Open button. Note: Apteryx highly recommends navigating to the specified directory via My Network Places instead of selecting a mapped drive letter.

  5. Note that the XV title bar now indicates a remote database has been mounted.

  6. To force the the storing of the new location in XV's global settings, exit the application. Launch XV on other workstations to assure the remote database is mounted.
